Upgrades will give you a boosts in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. Each upgrade also boosts a random substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item upgrader mod has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as useful for the latter because of the requirement to roll the perfect version.

They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor with an button, which will show an image of the item when it is upgraded if the player has sufficient materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot of the item upgrading and the current item level. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers.
