WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item Level upgrade by 3. A random extra substat is also added to each upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees higher trade value, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or a very high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less valuable for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and can be visited anytime to upgrade your equipment. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader each few weeks.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the item level, however they'll always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. button, which will display an item's preview at the next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The upgrade item cost depends on the slot of the item level upgrade and the current item level and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain amount, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items, including the main Island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of getting an entirely new recipe. The discount on upgrades increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade are acquired via various methods which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with some new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a certain item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading additional items to the same level will cost less even if they belong to a different gear set.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade item is reduced and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade item is cut as well, but is only available after certain milestones are achieved.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW, players have a variety of options. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specific and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests can only be spent on equipment that is of a particular rank, and every rank has different requirements for upgrading. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, based on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by finishing content at the appropriate level. This could be by doing outdoor activities or doing dungeons or raids in any difficulty to earn equipment of lower tier or Mythicbosses of raids or dungeons that have a high difficulty for endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The use of these currencies isn't too difficult however, the system will introduce a few changes to the overall upgrade process. For instance, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important modification is that crests have one purpose, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance, it's best to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to create. This is particularly relevant for rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, which can only be eligible to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
