Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Their decisions were influenced primarily by four factors such as their personality and multilingual identities, their ongoing lives, as well as their relationships. The MQ data were analysed to identify the participants' choices in terms of their pragmatics. The data was categorized according Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Refusal Interviews (RIs)

One of the major questions in pragmatic research is why learners choose to resist native-speaker pragmatic norms. Recent research has attempted to answer this question by using various experiments, including DCTs MQs and RIs. The participants were comprised of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They were asked to perform the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or L2. The results showed that, on average, the CLKs resisted the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even when they could produce patterns that were similar to native speakers. Furthermore, they were clearly conscious of their own pragmatism. They attributed their actions to learner-internal factors such as their personalities, multilingual identities, and ongoing life experiences. They also referred to external factors such as relational affordances. They described, for example, how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform better in terms of the linguistic and social standards of their university.

However, the interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and punishments that they might be subject to if they violated their social norms.
