Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its base stats increase in value. The value is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the chances of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the strength of those properties. It does not, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players a possibility to obtain better gear in earlier waves and is thus more beneficial in early game runs than later ones since most players prefer greater weapon scaling and defense over raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each level and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to increase the luck of the item up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any ability that is able to deal damage by five percent. These items can be bought from the shop, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are costly and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item in the event that it is not successful.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading that item and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased as much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail can't exceed 100%.

The Luck of an item can influence the success of an upgrade. All items have an initial success rate of 25%, and each item with Luck increases that chance by five percent.
