Upgrades can increase the value of armors, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses, such as PvE damage and crit chance.

For instance a weapon that has the upgrade template that ends in % will suffer an attack damage of 3% each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets to give an extra stat boost or impact while they're being used. These can be obtained by making crafts, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment with a slot for them. The item upgrader mod must have been at a minimum upgraded to blue level for a component to be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and Enrichments are type of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascended equipment, as well in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging gear from the ascended, or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A suffix or prefix can be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it's used on (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players make stronger versions of the equipment with less Upgrade Crystals than are required to achieve the same upgrade level through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the defense or attack characteristics of a weapon or armor. These upgrades are available to be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear or by purchasing them in the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals.

The player can get a maximum of five boost upgrades at a time. Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-level version of the item will appear at the time of the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to continue upgrading their gear even if they're not sure of how much they'll improve following a subsequent reset.

If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process can be costly and there is a substantial risk that the item may become obsolete or even break when it fails; a failed upgrade will cause the destruction of the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to decrease or eliminate the possibility of failure. Some upgrades also give the player a bonus if they are they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are available in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase them with certain tools that are unlimited in use as well as during Faction Crypt Raids. Once you have gotten the desired Glyphs you'll need them to be placed on your equipment. Druids for instance should position their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They may also consider placing them near their primary damage nodes.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to improve the performance of certain items by placing upgraded components in them. This is referred to as "upping". Each upgradeable item comes with a level that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum level of 385 ilvl. Each item level requires a different number of components to be reached and the cost of upgrading increase as the item upgrade is upgraded.

Certain upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient can be obtained by finishing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or on the upgrade tab in the crafting table. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed earns some Technology Points. These points can be used to level up the item. Once enough points are earned, the upgrade will be claimed and its additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrade the equipment they have, the base item will be replaced with an item that is new. This means that the same piece of armor will be transformed into an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item also comes with its own set bonus. This could be a disadvantage, as the item can become more expensive even if you don't require it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled if the player has enough tokens to be able to do this. The item will be replaced with the same item, but it has a base of level 1 and totally different bonuses. This can be useful for some items, but it's not something that should be performed frequently, since it could waste a lot of resources.

Certain upgrades can be rerolled several times which increases their value and allows the player to modify their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, since it grants an increase in power if the player repeatedly enters or leaves the water. Requirements

Each item can be upgraded up to five times, except for hero gear, which can be upgraded eight times. Every time you upgrade an object, it has a chance of failing. The rate of failure increases as you move beyond the maximum number. Failures will cause the item to go to its original state, requiring the player to spend more money on materials than they would had they stopped upgrading at the maximum amount of upgrades.

If an item is not upgraded the experience bar in its growth bar will reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it has gained like crit chance damage to attack, additional effects (such as a higher healing rate over time or reloading speed). However, the user can still continue to use the weapon or armor following the failure.

Whenever an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from lowest to highest. This means that if a weapon receives a crit chance boost it will be applied before any attack damage increases. A new attribute called Slots has been added to the definition of the item and the value is recomputed each time an upgrade is applied.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade items an item is based on the rarity rating and number of upgrade slots. The cost for upgrading non-premium items is equal to the base value of the upgrade item. For instance, a typical equipment item might have 5 upgrades with a cost of 25,600 Technology Points and 4x Quality Improvement Chance--whereas hero grade items will have an incredibly lower cost for each additional upgrade.

Premium items might have different upgrade requirements than regular gear. For example they might require fewer sowels, but more minerals and orons. The player will still need to take every piece of gear they wish to upgrade to NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine.
