On your PC, you can view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a few theories on how the calculation of the item's level is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula which calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that different perks have different worth, and also that gems in sockets add to the value of the item overall. This could result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is often very close to Blizzard's actual item level.

However, this is not the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, as the level of the region the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its haste or crit rating. Armor, shields and weapons can be created or spawned with the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to give +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.

Additionally there are certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be bought at the store or made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be a costly process and not all upgrades will succeed. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.

The rate of success of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading the item, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved and the chance of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%.

The Luck of an item can also influence the success of an upgrade. Each item has a base success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional 5%.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
