Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests Each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its stats are increased in value. The value is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, depending on the upgrader you choose and the type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is because of how many perks must be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.

It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear since PvP is not available at a lower level. The average level of an item can be found in the character sheet.

Using the item level will allow players to compare the power of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's a good indicator of an item's quality and how much damage it's capable of dealing with. Comparing items in a vendor's stock can be done using the item level.

The level of the item can be seen by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item is determined. One theory suggests that the level of an item is calculated using formulas that determine how valuable an item's stats really are. It considers the fact that different perks have different values and sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl calculated, which is often very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.

This is not the only thing that affects the ilvl of an item. The level of the area where the item was dropped can alter its stats. For instance, it could increase the item's haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses them in various ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to a single weapon, and to encourage players to explore other weapons. All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount of gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges as with other rerolling methods.

Players can upgrade an item with a specific stat, or reroll the affixes. The possible ranges of stats for an item are determined by the level of the item, however every item is guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it's an exclusive item or the result of a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that could change is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or choose which stats to boost. But as with base equipment, this would have to be carried out on a per-item upgrading basis, and the interface for item comparison will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time.

The Luck stat of a player can increase the probability of obtaining items and the properties that are created by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is more advantageous for early game runs, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each level and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn by using the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can be improved with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be crafted to increase the damage dealt by any skill that is able to deal damage by five percent. These items can be bought in the shop or constructed using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their chance of success or stop them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on the extent to which success rates can be increased and the chance of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%.

The success of an can be affected by the Luck of that item upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases that chance by five percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects can be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
