Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, increasing its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Typically objects that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base while items with strong bases like Eth titans don't change in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be used to upgrade trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or additional effect when the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, or found as loot gathered by enemies or obtained from missions and chests. Certain upgrades come with additional cosmetic effects. If an individual upgrades a gathering tool, and replaces glyphs with another glyph the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component, it will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped freely.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in several important ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before being "leveled out." The cost for upgrades is increased with each level, but the required materials do not increase as much.
