Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a set amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its base stats improve in value. This is the sum of all the upgraded benefits (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly dependent on the upgrader and the type of upgrade you choose to make. This is due to how many perks must be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.

It is also used as a gating requirement while queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It also serves to limit how much PvP gear players can use since PvP is not available at a lower level. The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell equipment players can look at the level of an item. It's a useful indicator of the quality of an item and the amount of damage it will be capable of causing. The item upgrader Mod level can also be used to evaluate items when evaluating the inventory of a vendor.

On your PC, you can see the level of the item level upgrade using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the full description of the item, including its ilvl. It can also be found by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories about how the item level calculation is done. One theory is that the level is a numerical value derived from a formula that determines the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in the sockets increase the value of the item. This could result in an Best item upgrade's ilvl calculated, which is usually very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.

This is not the only factor that affects the value of an item. The degree of the area in which the item was dropped may change its stats. For instance, it could add a level to the item's haste or crit score. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have higher ilvl.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the likelihood of locating items as well as the properties generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players a possibility to obtain better equipment earlier in the game and is therefore more useful in the early game than in later ones, since most players prefer greater weapon scaling and defense over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each level and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can spawn or be crafted using the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) to increase the value of 40 luck or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any skill that deals damage by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or created using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.

When you upgrade an item, the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%..

The Luck of an item can affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has an initial success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This may block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
