Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, increasing its base stats or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, like rings, can be upgraded into a stronger base. Items with bases that are strong, such as Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, trinkets and tools for gathering, offering an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, or found in loot, dropped by enemies or as a reward from missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain point before they are upgraded.

To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will need to select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade statistics and the necessary component or materials.

There are three types of universal upgrades (which include gems), prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be placed on any type of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that have a type restriction. Infusions are jewels that are only available in equipment that is legendary or ascended. They offer the same benefits as jewels, but cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, add their names to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for example adding the word Glyph to an item that is a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will change it to a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the case of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph with another the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace another upgrade component, it will be destroyed, with the exception for inscriptions, which can be swapped freely.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant differences from the previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before being "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the required materials don't increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a handful of important items to maximize their impact instead of spreading upgrade costs across multiple items.
