World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Upgrades to gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a set amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's stats base increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be costly, depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.

It is also used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can use as PvP is restricted at a lower level. Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

When deciding whether to buy or sell equipment players can look at the levels of the item level upgrade. It's an indicator of the item's damage and its quality. The item level can also be used to compare items when examining a vendor's inventory.

The item level can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including ilvl. It can also be located by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor and entering /itemlevel into chat.

There are a variety of theories on the method by which the level of an item is determined. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula that calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different worth, and also that gems in sockets add to the value of the item overall. This can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is usually close to the actual Blizzard item level.

However, this is not the only factor which can affect an item's ilvl as the level of the region the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, such as by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The item's stats can make or break an item for players. The game makes use of them in many ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to a single weapon and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The base stats on a weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn increased by the player's skill.

Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats of the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare levels will be upgraded multiple times with higher prices.

Another method to alter the stats on an item is through affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an Best item upgrader by the player and they come in all sizes and shapes. The affixes can provide the item extra damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down the cooldowns) or make the item unique by putting an additional name to the item.

Presently, all affixes are able to be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button with the arrows that circle. It will cost a set amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges similar to other methods of rerolling.

Players can choose to upgrade an item by specific stats, or reroll affixes. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it's an item that is unique or the result of a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to reroll affixes, or choose which stats to boost. Similar to the base equipment, this must be done per item level upgrade, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't display all possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the likelihood of locating items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade equipment earlier in the game. This is more beneficial in the early game, since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance, which increases with each level of the item and can be further increased by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn using the Luck property, with a default value of 40. These items can be improved by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.

Furthermore, certain items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it fails.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so much, and the likelihood that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..

The Luck of an item can influence the success of an upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by an additional five percent.

The upgrade overlays for items are displayed above items in the inventory. This can obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
