Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.

Item Level

The level of the item can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are many theories about how the item level is calculated. One theory suggests that the item level is determined by an equation that determines the value of the stats of an item really are. The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items and the properties that are spawned by loot and the intensity of these properties. It does not, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs than in later ones, since most players prefer more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. Moreover there are certain items, such as the Hollow infused weapon can be used to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items are available in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are a costly process and not all upgrades will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chances of success for an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item if it fails.

When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on the extent to which success rates can be increased and the chance of a failed upgrade cannot be greater than 100%..

The success of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of the item. All items have an initial success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by an additional 5%.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects can be obstructed by them.
