Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and boost additional stats.

The process of upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its base stats are increased in value. This value is the total of all the leveled up perks (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader you choose and what kind of upgrade you decide to make. This is because of how many perks have to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.

It is also used as a gating requirement when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear as PvP is restricted at lower levels. Players can view their average level of item on their character sheet.

Utilizing the level of an item can help players evaluate the potency of gear when deciding to purchase or sell. It's an indicator of the item's damage and quality. Comparing items from a vendor's stock can be done by using the level of the item.

The level of the item can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are various theories on how the item level calculation is done. One theory states that the level of an item is calculated using formulas that determine how valuable the stats of an item really are. It is based on the fact that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in sockets boost the value of the item. This process can result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl which is typically close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.

This isn't the only factor that affects the value of an item. The degree of the area in which the item was dropped may change its stats. For example, it could add a level to the item's haste, or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.

Item Stats

Item stats are a big part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The base stats on a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat mods which are then increased by the player's skill.

Upgrades to an item may boost its stats. The rarity of an item determines its cost of upgrading. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare levels will be upgraded multiple times at higher prices.

Affixes are a different method to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to give the item additional damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down the duration of cooldowns), or make the item unique by putting a special name to the item.

All affixes can be re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade menu pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges just like the other rerolling methods.

In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can select which stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However, all items will contain at least one stat in the range, unless they are a unique item, or a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could change is the possibility to upgrade item equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. However, as with the base equipment, this would need to be carried out on a per-item basis and the interface for comparing items wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of finding items, the properties spawned on loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial in the early game, since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each item level and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) to add another 40 luck or to increase the luck of the item to 140.

Additionally some items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item if it fails.

The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.

The success of an upgrade is also affected by the Luck of that item. Each item has an overall success rate of 25 percent and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

The upgrade overlays of the item are rendered above items in the inventory. This could obscure enchantment effects and other effects.
