Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level, and also boost other stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item is determined. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that calculates how much an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that different perks have different worth, and also that sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This can result in an item level upgrade's ilvl calculated, which is usually very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, because the size of the area the item dropped in can alter the value of its stats, such as by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players to not restrict themselves to a particular weapon and to motivate players to experiment with other weapons. The stat modifications of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by a player's level.

The upgrades to an item can increase its stats. The rarity of an item determines the upgrade cost. An item that is white or grey for instance, will only be upgraded once and items with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.

Affixes can also be used to change an item's stats. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes are used to provide items with extra damage or other special capabilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs), or to distinguish them by naming them.

Presently, all affixes are able to be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with circling arrows. This will cost a certain amount in gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges, just like the other rerolling methods.

Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll attaches. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However every item will contain at least one stat within the range, unless they are a unique item, or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

This is another aspect that could be changed by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or selecting which stats to enhance. As with the base equipment, it must be done per item and the interface for item comparison will not show all possible stats at once.

The Luck stat of a player boosts the chance of finding items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade gear earlier in the game. This is more useful for early game runs, because players tend to put weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each new level of item. These can also be increased by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons come with a default Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to increase the Luck of the item up to 140.

Additionally some items, such as the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available in the shop, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade item (visit the next document), or to protect players from losing their items if it fails.

The rate of success of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of completing the upgrade successfully and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased as much, and the likelihood that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..

The luck of an item can also affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. All items have a base success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional five percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be obstructed by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
