WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. Each upgrade also increases a random substat.

Upgraded gear generally sees more value in trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or a very high stat variation (like eth titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the requirement to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and can be accessed at any time to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item however, they are always cheaper than buying new equipment. For instance upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items which can be used to upgrade weapons tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be bought by players from NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level, in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each upgrade items cost 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of the Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currency types.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items in addition to the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade item discount and a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no item upgrader available at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are available only through a variety means. This is both a benefit as well as a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with numerous new features added. After the player has upgraded to a certain level of Best item upgrade for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item level will cost less. This is even if those items come from another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones required to upgrade is reduced and the discount is available across all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

Players have a variety of options for upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are a crucial part of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System that was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests can only be used on gear of a specific rank, and that every rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and easiest upgrade items costs 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade requires up to 20 crests, based on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons of all difficulty for items of higher tier, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons for gear that is used in the endgame. Crests can be exchanged at an item level upgrade; click here to find out more, upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the process of upgrading. For example, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is intended to allow players to get their equipment to the highest level possible on all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests wisely, as they are only used for one purpose. For instance it's Best item upgrade to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top equipment available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you plan on making. This is particularly applicable to rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to benefit from the account-wide discount if all slots are full of high-quality equipment.
