The ability to upgrade items allows players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Usually, items that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, while items with strong bases like Eth titans don't change significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

If an individual upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces glyphs with another glyph, the old one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component the item will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions, which are able to be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in several key ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can be upgraded a certain number of times before being "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, but the materials required do not. Rerolling

Clicking the Upgrade button will display the attributes of the item and the required items to upgrade it.
