With an elegant circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxes this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive designs in our tests. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has a simple mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This could be a concern in the mornings before work or at night when you're trying to sleep.

It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floorplans and identify obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with how dirty they tend to be.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose models that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house using the app or voice controls. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have number of furniture. Also, a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to set up a spot-clean. It can also be used to it to prioritize your dirtiest areas for greater efficiency.
