Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. They also increase bonuses, such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

Components
Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to provide an additional stat boost or effect while they're in use. They can be obtained through making crafts, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by specific cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can be placed in equipment with a slot for them; the item upgrader must be at the very least upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be inserted. In contrast to other mods components can only be used once; they cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging ascended equipment or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them in the cash shop or collecting them from enemies when upgrading other gear.
Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher tier version of an item will be revealed at the next reset. This gives players a reason to upgrade their gear even in the event that they don't know what will be improved after the reset.
Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process can be costly, and there is a significant risk that the item may be obsolete or even break when it fails. Leveling
The upgrade system for items allows players to improve the performance of certain items by placing upgraded components in them. This is also known as "upping". The amount of resources needed to upgrade an Best item upgrader is dependent on its rarity score and upgrade slot count.
