Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor near is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.
Some of the symptoms of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is likely that your sensor cars is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good news is they are very cheap and easily accessible, especially if you're looking at the Bosch unit which is what ours are. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi tt key because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. If this sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends signals via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common component across the Audi key blade 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
