It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It's a bit tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and should be replaced. 5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues with your car. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points.
